Benefits to MSU/CVM Equine Department

Donations obtained from the stallion service auction will be used to enhance our ability to provide diagnostics and care for lame horses. The most recent national estimates of equine diseases indicate that lameness is the number one cause of economic loss to the equine industry. At Mississippi State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, lameness is also one of the most common reasons horses present for evaluation. To help our equine clients we have recently obtained advanced imaging resources including state-of-the-art ultrasonic capabilities, computed tomography (CT) and digital radiographic equipment. Additional advanced imaging techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of equine lameness would improve our service to our equine clients and improve the equine industry in the state of Mississippi. We would like to further update our nuclear scintigraphy (bone scan) capabilities and add magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to our diagnostic lameness offerings.

Nuclear scintigraphy utilizes radioisotopes and a crystal detector to identify areas of inflammation and greatly facilitates lameness evaluation in horses where more than one limb is involved. It is also helpful in very subtle forms of lameness.

MRI is a noninvasive, two-dimensional, cross-sectional imaging techique that provides superior resolution of soft tissues. MRI is beneficial for both soft tissue evaluation (joint, tendon and ligament) and subtle bone abnormalities. There are no MRIs suitable for horses currently available in the South.

With your help, we can acquire these advanced imaging techniques which will provide the “next step” in the evaluation of lameness when x-rays and ultrasound fail to establish a definitive diagnosis. With the appropriate diagnosis, every horse will have the opportunity to obtain the appropriate therapy.

Funds will be distributed by the stallion auction steering committee: Dr. Ann Rashmir-Raven, Dr. Ron McLaughlin, Dr. Richard Hopper and Tonya Graham.
