  • 3nd Annual COBRE Symposium was held in July and tangible results included establishment of new collaborations and specific project advice from the EAC and external metnors.
  • MSU COBRE Junior Investigator, Henry Wan, received the COBRE’s first R01. Dr. Wan’s score was in the 1stpercentile for his application, “GenomeBased Influenza Vaccine Strain Selection using Machine Learning”. This occurred during the 2nd year of our COBRE.
  • MSU COBRE Junior Investigator, Henry Wan was promoted to the rank of Professor (only 6 years after accepting a tenure track position at MSU), and he won the Ralph E. Powe Research Excellence Awards, the highest research award at MSU, an institution with approximately 1,100 faculty members.
  • MSU COBRE Junior Investigator, Dr. Keun Seok Seo received continued funding (~$100,000/year) from the Quarantine and Inspection Agency of South Korea to develop a vaccine for Staphylococcal mastitis in cows.
  • A new COBRE/MSU Research Core has been established in r2219 in the Wise Center. Instrumentation includes: A Biotek Cytation 5 multifunction plate reader and microscope with image analysis capability, An AKTA Flux protein concentration system, An AKTA FPLC system, Luminex multiplexed bead array reader, nanodrop DNA/RNA analyzer, Anesthesia machine in fume hood for animal studies. COBRE personnel who have been trained in the used of key instruments are available to train others or to analyze samples. Funds Carried Forward from Year 3 were used to purchase a new Novocyte 3-laser, 13-color flow cytometer to replace our aging FACSCalibur. This instrument is available to all MSU faculty members or their trainees on a fee for service basis through Technical Core C (cellular purification and analysis)
  • Lucas Ferguson, an undergraduate student working in Dr. Wan’s lab was the first MSU student to receive a Gates/Cambridge scholarship, which will allow him to spend 1 year studying for his M.Phil. degree at Cambridge University in England. Less than 40 of these scholarships are awarded annually, so it is impressive that Lucas was selected.
  • Core B ("Omics" Core) added personnel in bioinformatics and proteomics.
  • Dr. Keun Seok Seo (Junior Investigator) and colleagues at the University of Mississippi Medical Center published a paper in the Journal of Bacteriology. This paper was selected by the Editors of this highly regarded journal as an “article of significant interest”.
