Dr. Kari Lunsford, Assistant Professor in Small Animal Internal Medicine,
recently submitted a grant application for over $9,000,000 to the
Michelson Foundation to comprehensively explore innovative new vaccination
technology for the non-surgical neutering of dogs and cats. Drs. Andrew
Mackin, Patty Lathan and Kim Johnson are co-investigators on this grant.
Dr. Patty Lathan, Assistant Professor in Small Animal Internal Medicine,
and Drs Todd Archer and John Thomason, Small Animal Internal Medicine
Residents, recently gave presentations at the American College of
Veterinary Internal Medicine Forum in Montreal, Canada. Dr. Lathan
presented a paper on the main scientific program on Pathophysiology of
Hypoadrenocorticism in Dogs and People. Dr. Archer presented a research
abstract on his project Development of a Flow Cytometric Panel of
T-lymphocyte Biomarkers to Evaluate the Immunosuppressive Effects of
Cyclosporine in Dogs, and Dr. Thomason presented a research abstract on
his project Effects of Cyclosporine on Canine Platelet Procoagulant
Activity. The studies are Drs. Archer's and Thomason's Master of
Veterinary Science projects, and are supervised by Drs. Andrew Mackin and
Kari Lunsford. Continuing work on Dr. Archer's project (Comprehensive
Evaluation of the Pharmacodynamics of Cyclosporine in the Dog) was
recently awarded a grant of over $10,000 by the ACVIM Foundation.
Dr. Andrew Mackin, Professor and Dr. Hugh G. Ward Chair of Small Animal
Medicine recently visited Saint Andrews, Scotland, as invited key note
speaker in the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Scottish branch of the
British Small Animal Veterinary Association. He also recently presented
one to two day sessions on topics in small animal internal medicine and
hematology at the Southeastern Veterinary Conference in Myrtle Beach,
South Carolina, and the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association Annual
Conference in Sandestin, Florida. Dr. Todd Archer also gave a lecture on
Fever of Unknown Origin and presented small animal hematology case
discussions in the veterinary program, and Lisa Chrestman gave
presentations of Transfusion and Chemotherapy in the veterinary technician
program, at the Sandestin ALVMA Conference.
