Welcome and thank you for visiting the web site of Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Our College is unique because it is one of only 27 fully accredited colleges of veterinary medicine in the U.S. We graduated our first class in 1981 and though we are a relatively young college, our graduates have already distinguished themselves in careers across the breadth of veterinary medicine. While most of our graduates serve their communities as private practitioners, many others have careers in industry and in public practice in state and federal government.
As part of a comprehensive land grant institution, the mission of our College is to train future veterinarians, educate veterinarians and scientists, and improve the quality of life for producers and pet owners. The goal of our more than 90 faculty members is to fully integrate their teaching and research activities with outreach and engagement to the benefit of our students and the people and animals of Mississippi and beyond.
A major portion of our teaching effort is in our professional curriculum. What began as a few veterinary science courses in MSU’s Department of Veterinary Science has developed into a strong curriculum leading to the awarding of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Our admissions process is competitive, and we only accept highly qualified students with the necessary knowledge and abilities to meet the needs of those whom veterinarians serve. We are committed to maintaining a flexible curriculum that is responsive to the changing needs of our students, the changing requirements of the veterinary profession, and the diverse biological needs of the animal kingdom.
Our research is world-class and is closely integrated with our program in graduate education. We have 3 departments including Basic Sciences, Clinical Sciences, and Pathobiology and Population Medicine. Our research programs represent many disciplines that address urgent issues including agroterroism, bioterroism, environmental safety, animal diseases, human diseases, food safety, new or emerging disease pathogens and other veterinary issues that pose a threat to the well-being of our citizens.
Our Animal Health Center serves both as a primary care center and a multi-state referral tertiary care facility. Our patients come to us for treatment ranging from routine vaccinations to limb sparing surgery, for cancer treatment, and for everything else in between. Whether small animal, equine, or agricultural animal, we commit ourselves to treating each of our patients with care, respect, and precise attention to ensure the finest veterinary treatment possible.
