Letter from the Senior Director of Development

Dear Friends,

The College of Veterinary Medicine takes pride and care in identifying and educating those rare and committed individuals who dedicate their lives to protecting and caring for animals.  As a state-assisted institution, rather than a state-supported one, our CVM relies on state appropriations for basic operating costs.  The vital resources that attract top students and faculty, support new research endeavors and enrich the colleges’ innovative programs all depend on private support.

A college of veterinary medicine requires qualified and dedicated personnel, modern equipment, adequate facilities and strong constituent support that recognizes the value of veterinary medicine to society.  We are teaching a new generation of veterinarians to become problem solvers and lifelong learners, ready to protect the health of animals and people and to meet the current and coming challenges in animal health, biosecurity, biomedical advances, and global environmental issues.

Our College of Veterinary Medicine has touched the lives of millions of pet owners, farmers, equestrians, veterinarians, wildlife rehabilators, agricultural scientists, educators and students.  The Animal Health Center is a valued resource for regional veterinarians and animal owners.  The hospital examines diagnoses and treats more than 6,000 individually owned pets each year.  Diagnostics and research prevented tens of millions of dollars in losses to aquaculture, poultry, beef, dairy and swine producers.

We exist today, and are able to have this type of impact, because of individuals with vision and foresight to invest in the future of animal care. However, we still have a long way to go in addressing the changing needs of animal health care and well being, the environment and public health.

Financial contributions from friends, alumni, practitioners, industry, foundations, clubs and other organizations make the college great and enable us to touch the lives of many.  Your support makes a difference in animal health care and research in Mississippi, throughout the region and around the country.  You, the contributor, ensure that the CVM reaches its full potential in serving the needs of the state, its animals, and its people.

A very generous donor to the CVM once told me that there are many great causes to support, but he focuses his philanthropy primarily on higher education because that is where we find   solutions to problems facing the world and a strong educational system is crucial for the success of future generations.
