Research - Specific research interest in small animal hematology and hemostasis. Particular areas of research in these fields include evaluation of platelet numbers and function in both dogs and cats, methods of bone marrow collection, feline blood types, transfusion medicine, the genotypic and phenotypic characterization of red blood cell thiopurine methyltransferase enzyme activity in dogs receiving azathioprine and evaluation of the effects of cyclosporine on hemostasis and platelet function using viscoelastometry, point-of-care platelet function analysis and flow cytometric markers of platelet activation, and of cyclosporine, dexamethasone, dantrolene and other newer immunosuppressive agents on the immune system using flow cytometric and PCR analysis of markers of T-cell function.
Teaching - Strong interest in providing effective clinical training of veterinary students, interns, residents, and practicing veterinarians. Continuing education emphasis on the use of the problem-orientated approach to patients with diagnostically challenging conditions.
Clinical - General clinical interest in the entire spectrum of presentations and diseases relevant to the specialty of internal medicine.
Clinical focus on small animal hematology, hemostasis and immunohematology. Particular areas of clinical publication and continuing education presentations in these fields include immune-mediated thrombocytopenia and hemolytic anemia in both dogs and cats, immunosuppressive therapy, diagnosis and treatment of hemostatic disorders, bone marrow evaluation, and transfusion therapy.

Specific clinical and research interest in small animal hematology, hemostasis and immunohematology. Particular areas of research and
publication in these fields include immune-mediated thrombocytopenia and hemolytic anemia in both dogs and cats, pharmacokinetics of low molecular weight heparin (enoxaparin) in dogs, immunosuppressive therapy (with an emphasis on vincristine, azathioprine, cyclosporine and dantrolene), evaluation of platelet numbers and function in both dogs and cats, methods of bone marrow collection, feline blood types, and transfusion medicine.
