Varela-Stokes' Laboratory

Vector-borne

We are a parasitology lab interested in vector-borne diseases, particularly those transmitted by ixodid (hard) ticks. Our current focus is the spotted fever group rickettsia, Rickettsia parkeri, a human pathogen transmitted by the Gulf Coast tick, Amblyomma maculatum, though we occasionally work on other tick-borne agents as well. For more information about our past and present research projects, please click on "Research" to the left.
